Wildling

alternate names: wer-, werefolk
plural: wildlings
adjectives: werian

Choose a type: beasthide, longtooth, swiftstride, or wildhunt

Werefolk are not often seen at all, as you’re much more liable to frighten one before you knowing they were there. They would more easily be compared to wildlife than to civilized humanoid culture. They seem to come most from the Wilds to the south.

Werefolk are a sort of an in-between species. Somewhat of a biological mystery, they stand in the gap between generations of firbolg and halfling and the rest of the animal kingdom. Firbolg have long been a core part in the shepherding the wilds to the south and protecting much of the diverse and thriving wildlife all across Dia. This integration has lead to the evolution of werefolk.

Possessing the intellect of their firbolg guardians and the instinct of the wild, werefolk and wise and cunning. Nothing really holds them down except hard truths and personal value. They act on their own accord, even if that accordance is to follow and fiercely protect their tribe.

Werefolk would be best described as one of the links between beast and humanoid. Not to be confused with lycanthropy, which has been falsely attributed as a werefolk curse. Werefolk originated from a millennia of generational symbiosis between woollykin and beastkin; firbolg and halflings communed with the wilds and the beasts took them in as family. Lycanthropy on the other hand is a disease of unknown origin of which any species can be a potential carrier. It is transmitted mainly through bites and scratches, hence the werefolk connotation, however it can also be passed through family blood or via sexual contact.
